Dining Table Bases | Custom Furniture ideas
Have you ever busted your knee or ankle on a “well” placed dining table leg?
Or had to straddle the leg when trying to squeeze another person at the table for dinner?
Designing your ideal dining table gives you the chance to put your priorities first. Details matter.
Think about support placement during the design. Do you need the flexibility to add guests? Then a central support like a pedestal or trestle might be best.
If you like to stretch your legs out as you’re spending quality time with loved ones then legs at corners could be better for you.
There will always be tradeoffs, no perfect design exists. Is your furniture artisan guiding you through the pros and cons? What will it take to maximize the joy and utility at the same time?
Dining tables are often much more than places to gather and eat. They can be homework centers. Or jigsaw puzzle homes. Would an expandable table fit your lifestyle more fully?
If you fancy an expandable table, think about having self-storing table leaves. Gone are the days of storing parts of the table in a coat closet.
And just as exciting, modern hardware allows one-person opening and closing options for the top. Also gone are the days of having to go help your mom pull the table apart to take out a leaf and push the table back together. It can all be done one-handed. Some day there might even be an app for that!
The point here is that planning for the function of your custom furniture influences the design. They work hand in hand. In my book a great design that functions poorly is not a great design. Details matter. Thinking ahead matters.
