Do You Caress Your Furniture?
Bespoke Furniture Feels Special | Quality Matters
The Unparalleled Feeling of Custom Furniture
We have a friend that caresses our dining table every time she comes over for dinner. We’ll be talking after the meal and her hand just goes back and forth across the surface of the walnut top. Her reaction is almost rapturous. Can your furniture do that?
When we eat at her house, she always mentions that her table, purchased from a well known, higher-end furniture chain, just doesn’t feel that great. It looks ok, but doesn’t inspire her. What gives?
The key to getting the finish to not only look great, but feel sublime, is in the surface preparation of the wood. And that takes a lot of time and careful attention to get right.
What sanding a piece we typically go “through the grits.” We start with a low grit, perhaps 120, and then repeat the process with successively finer sandpaper. For a proper tabletop finish, we usually go from 120 to 150 to 180 to 220 to 320 to 400 and then often 1000 grit. That’s giving the top a thorough sanding seven times. With a thorough cleaning between each grit.
For you finishing nerds out there, this is for when we use hard wax oils. If using a spray film finish we’ll stop at 180, so that the finish has some tooth to adhere to.

Handmade Furniture
It Feels As Good As It Looks
Some call it boring. I find it more meditative. It’s a meticulous process that take hours to do right. The results, however, speak for themselves. The rugged softness of natural timber shines for all to see. And feel. It’s why you won’t get the same feeling from commercially manufactured pieces. That level of fine craftsmanship and detail is not the focus of the box stores. Their work is good, often really good. But is it truly special?
It’s what separates fine, handcrafted furniture from the rest. The time, care and attention to detail. The focus on getting it right for the individual client. The special feeling when you caress the table while enjoying the company of family and friends. What feels right for you?
