Custom Furniture | How Do you Decide?
We recently traveled to Eugene, Oregon to celebrate our daughter’s graduation from the University of Oregon. Go Ducks! Two down, one to go! We’re so proud of her as she moves on to her next chapter.
Like her father (me), and my father, she earned a degree in Economics. My dad was an Economics professor at the University of Cincinnati for nearly 40 years. I went into medicine, but the lessons of Economic study were invaluable during my surgical career.
Is Custom Furniture For You?
What does this have to do with custom furniture, you ask? Most people think Economics is the study of business and finance. But it’s really the study of how people make decisions. Whether it’s a financial decision, related to health care, or choosing a new car, just about any decision we make involves some sort of trade offs. Economics tries to understand these behaviors.
As we enjoyed the festivities and listened to the professors gush about their students, it got me thinking about the decisions folks make when they choose to invest in their homes and lifestyles. As a small custom furniture shop I think about Economics all the time - when talking to clients, investing in my shop or writing blog posts. I’ve written a lot about custom furniture in Economic terms:
Why is custom furniture for some people and not for others?
What emotions influence purchasing custom furniture?
How do people prioritize?
How important is value vs. price?
Invest In Your Lifestyle | Decisions Matter
Commissioning custom furniture is truly an Economic decision (not just a financial one). Sure, it’s about money, but also values, emotions and personal history, all of which go into decisions. How do you make decisions? What are your priorities?
Think about these details. Because details matter.
