What Does Custom Furniture Cost? | Why That’s the Wrong Question

Leading with price for artisan work | How not to start

If you’re in the market for custom furniture then price can’t be your first question. If price is your priority then heading to the furniture store is a better bet. This is not to say that the price you pay isn’t an important factor, it just shouldn’t be the first thing you ask your chosen shop.

If it is your first question for the shop, then be prepared to answer the return question, which is, “what are you willing to invest in a unique piece that brings lasting value to your life?”

We’re not asking what you’re willing to pay. That’s transactional. One and done.

As we’ve discussed previously, handcrafted furniture is an investment and an experience. The higher price up front brings lasting value. The piece is tailored to your specific wants and needs. It should last generations. It sets you apart.

By definition, custom furniture is unique. Your design will require careful thought and planning to bring it to life. The maker has to decide which processes to use. And in what order. There aren’t time saving jigs made yet. If modern, CNC machinery is used the programming needs to be created. Unforeseen issues haven’t been worked through. It’s part of the excitement and challenge of bespoke creations. And it takes valuable time to get it right. The details here matter critically.

Keep in mind that we’re not talking about built-to-order furniture, where you pick a species of wood, and perhaps choose various size or hardware options. These are designs that have practiced and refined processes. If that gets you what you want then you should go for it, as you’ll likely save money, and perhaps time. It just won’t be unique to you.

If you’re considering working with a custom furniture builder then, by definition, your needs aren’t being met by the market. So priorities and processes should adjust accordingly. Find the right shop first. Make sure you’re a good fit. Maximize the chances of a good return on your investment early in the process. And always keep in mind that you’re investing in your lifestyle and in the long term.

The up front price of custom furniture will fade as the long term value grows. How do you want to live?
